Fangirl, Rainbow Rowell

books2.jpgI was excited to read Fangirl after seeing it in the WHSmith’s Zoella Book Club. It follows Cath and Wren, identical twin sisters, as they leave home for university. They both have very different personalities and take to university life in completely different ways. It’s a story of growing up, fanfiction and, of course, love.

The thing I loved most about Fangirl was the narrative writing style. It’s written in 3rd person, but is through the perspective of Cath, which I think makes the novel really clever and much more intriguing to read. I also loved being able to relate to the storyline. Whilst I don’t write fanfiction, I understand what it’s like to be passionate about something and to want to incorporate that passion into my everyday life. Cath and Wren are at similar stages in their lives to myself, so I really enjoyed reading their stories, for that reason.

Even talking about them here, almost as if they were real, you can see that I found the characters really likeable. I especially like the bond that’s formed between Cath, Levi and Reagan, as its not your typical ‘friendship’ story.

I Knew You Were Trouble, Paige Toonbooks.jpg

I only found out after reading I Knew You Were Trouble that its actually the 2nd book to the Jessie Jefferson collection! So I don’t want to give too much of the plot away, because it will inevitably contain spoilers for the 1st novel.

However, I found I knew You Were Trouble to be a really light and easy to read story, with a plot that offers escapism; a perfect summer read! I found it easy to engage with the plot and understand each of the characters. Jessie, the protagonist, is definitely likeable and I only wish that I’d have discovered the 1st book before this one, so that I could have got involved with her journey a little more!

Everyday, David Levithan

books4.jpgEveryday follows A who, whilst is still himself, wakes up in a different body each day. It is only when he meets Rhiannon, after living in the body of her boyfriend, that he begins to open up about his life, and wants to form more personal relationships.

I absoloutely love the way that David Levithan writes in this book. I think his writing style is so eloquent, that some of his words really made me think about certain concepts, and often stayed with me long after I’d put the book down. The storyline he has chosen for this book really intrigued me, as its something so different to everything else that’s out there. I also really liked A, the main character, as his personality and words appeared to be so genuine and pragmatic.

After reading Everyday, I cannot wait to read more of David Levithan’s books, as I’m sure they too will live up to the quality of Everyday.

August Favourites

I haven’t written a monthly favourites post in so long, but I am so happy to get back to it! I’ve created a list of the top 5 beauty products I have been loving throughout August.

  1. Rimmel Lasting Finish Foundation: I recently tried out Rimmel’s long lasting foundation in the shade 010 light porcelain. I’ve found its really easy to blend, and gives great, even coverage. It also matches my skin tone perfectly and lasts throughout the whole day.
  2. Rimmel Stay Matte Powder: This matte powder is a perfect way to hold makeup in place, without adding an extra layer to my makeup. It feels very light, whilst managing to make your look appear more flawless and finished.
  3. Spectrum Collections D01 makeup brush: This makeup brush by Spectrum Collections can be used for any powder products. I therefore like to use it for my bronzer and blusher as part of my makeup routine. Its super soft and therefore helps to blend products really well.
  4. Schwarzkopf Shine Spray: I’m always looking for products to use for when my hair feels a little dry and lifeless, especially after applying heat to it. And I have found that this shine spray makes my hair feel a lot softer, with it giving a shine to my hair after straightening it.
  5. Garnier Micellar Water: I use Garnier’s Micellar Water to both cleanse my skin and remove my makeup. Its perfect for sensitive skin, as it doesn’t have any harsh chemicals as part of its formula. It also leaves my skin feeling really soft, so I always use it as part of my skincare routine.

My Current Summer Favourites

So I thought I would share with you the products that I have been loving throughout Summer so far! I haven’t done a monthly favourites post in quite a while and figured this would be a good way to get back into these kind of posts.

  1. Collection Contour Kit: Throughout Summer, I find that it’s nice to wear a more bronzed make up look and, to do this, I’ve been loving Collection’s contour kit. The bronzer is very pigmented and the highlighter is super pretty. It’s definitely gives more colour and dimension to your make up look, with the two powders working really well together.faves4
  2. Lush Candy Cream Bubble Bar: I recently visited Lush Oxford Street and it was amazing! With three floors of bath bombs, bubble bars and everything between, there were certainly so many different products to choose from! So I decided to try one of their bubble bars, as I never had before. After trying the Candy Cream one, I love the concept of it and it left my bath pretty in pink and smelling amazing.faves1
  3. Barry M Quick Dry Nail Polish – Eat My Dust: Barry M are one of my favourite brands for nail polishes and when I tried this shade, it was no different. This has to be one of my favourites of theirs, as the pastel shade complements my skin tone really well. It also dries really quickly, which obviously just makes the whole process of painting my nails much easier!faves5
  4. Zoella Candy Cream Body Lotion: As I’m sure you already know, Zoella recently bought out her Sweet Inspirations range. However, I’m still loving the products in her Tutti Frutti collection! I think that the scent and the range of products make this collection my favourite one that she has released so far. So I recently tried out the body lotion, which smells amazing and leaves my skin feeling super soft and moisturised afterwards.faves2
  5. mac Pink Pearl Pop Lipstick: This is the first mac lipstick I have ever tried,
after hearing such great things about them. And I agree with all of their great reviews! I think this shade has been perfect for Summer, as it’s very pigmented and pretty. It’s also very easy to apply and a great, long-lasting lip product to wear!faves3

So there are my 5 current Summer favourites; I’ll be sure to post more of these beauty product posts here on my blog, to let you know of any products that you may like to try for yourself. Do let me know in the comments your Summer favourites and any products you think I, or any other bloggers, may like to try 🙂

My Recent Reads

Finding Audrey, Sophie Kinsella

I’ve alwblog-finding audreyays been a fan of Sophie Kinsella, so I was really excited to hear that she had written her first YA book. Without giving away the story, Finding Audrey is about a young girl with social anxiety. She struggles to leave the house and take off her dark glasses, until she meets her brother’s friend, Linus.

I really enjoyed reading Finding Audrey, and it opened my eyes up to mental health issues in a really positive way. I love the way that Sophie has written Finding Audrey; its very easy to read and, once I started reading, I couldn’t put it down. It’s one of those books where you want to find out what happens in the end, but you don’t want to finish it!

I’d definitely recommend this book to anyone who may be struggling with, or wanting to find out about, mental health issues, and anyone that enjoys reading young adult fiction. Finding Audrey definitely makes it into one of my all time favourite books 🙂

Paper Towns, John Green

Before reading Paper Towns, I’d never read any novels by John Green, so blog-paper townsafter all of the great reviews that I’d heard, I was excited to read his books.

Paper Towns is a love and ‘adventure’ story; when Margo doesn’t turn up to school after a all night adventure with narrator Quentin, Q must find all of the clues that lead to Margo and let him find out who she really is. I love the plot of Paper Towns and some of the quotes in there by Green are really sweet. The fact that he uses a ‘not-your-average’ love story to enable both Q and Margo to find out who they really are made me love the story even more.

All the Bright Places, Jennifer Niven

blog-all the bright placesI wanted to read this after Zoella put it in her June favourites video last year, as she recommended it to all of her viewers and later put it in the Zoella Book Club. All the Bright Places is told from the perspectives of Finch and Violet, who meet at school, at the top of the bell tower. Finch is constantly dreaming about dying and taking his own life, whilst Violet is struggling with the death of her sister. It’s a story based around mental heath and raises awareness of serious issues, in a very relatable and accessible way.

This is honestly one of the most emotional and engaging books I’ve ever read. I love the way that Jennifer Niven writes; her words in this book seem so beautiful and melodic. The way that she tells such a sad, yet beautiful story is incredible and the perfect YA book. Again, it’s a book that’s made its way into my all time favourites and I’m excited to read more novels by Jennifer.

January Favourites

So, the first chapter of 2016 is drawing to a close. I’ve been fairly busy these past few weeks, what with the start of a New Year! But, I’ve also discovered a lot of new products, that I want to share with you for this month’s favourites.

1.  Jack Wills Hope Cove Body Spray

This body spray was bought out by Jack Wills as part of their Christmas Collection. As soon as I saw them, I knew I had to try them. And it is the perfect scent for a body spray, as it’s very pretty and girly in its smell. It also lasts throughout the day and is the perfect addition to my cosmetic bag.

2.  Clinique Pop Lip Colour and Primer

I’ve been loving wearing a nude lip this month and I’ve found that Clinique’s lipstick has definitely been the one I’ve turned to in order to do that. It’s colour is so lovely and subtle, which makes it the perfect complement for a natural make-up look. It also has a really good application, as it feels soft and is definitely long lasting.

jan4        jan3        jan4

3.  Fig and Orange Oil Hand Cream

I’ve been using this hand cream, from Marks & Spencer, throughout January, as it smells so good. It has a light, fruity smell to it and is perfect for all year round. It really softens the skin and makes it perfect to either pop on your bedside table, or put into your handbag when travelling.

jan8                jan7               jan8

4.  Miss Sporty Concealer

This month, I decided to experiment more with the coverage I use as part of my make up routine. I therefore decided to try out Miss Sporty’s Concealer. I have very fair skin, so sometimes its difficult to find concealer and foundation that complements my complexion. However, I’ve found that this one, in the lightest shade, gives me really good coverage. It’s also very affordable and applies really well.

November Favourites

I’m happy that I now get to write my November Favourites post, because that means that it’s December and it is officially acceptable to get excited for Christmas 🙂 So here’s what I’ve discovered, and have been loving, during the month of November.

  1. Barry M Rose Quartz Glitter Nail Varnish

I’ve only recently discovered this Barry M nail polish, as I’d never really seen it before. And it’s now one of my favourite nail polishes that I own. It is so pretty and elegant, and gives the perfect amount of sparkle. It’s a great nail varnish to wear for special occasions and is perfect to wear on top of a contrasting nail colour.

November1     November2     November1

    2.   Soap and Glory Sugar Crush Body Scrub

Soap and Glory currently have an alternative scent to their original, which contains smashed brown sugar, sweet lime, almond oil and macadamia grains. I love it’s sweet and sugary smell, and think it makes the products so refreshing. I also love the fact that they’ve used this scent for this body scrub, as the two work really well together. It’s cleansing and exfoliating and leaves the skin feeling super soft and smooth, so I’d definitely recommend using this as part of your skincare routine.

November8 November7

  3.   VO5 Nourish my Shine Conditioner

Recently, my hair has been feeling pretty dry and lifeless, and so I was on the search for something to rejuvenate it and bring it back to life. I came across VO5’s conditioner, which is specifically for ‘dry and damaged hair’. I decided to try it and, when I did, my hair instantly felt super soft and silky. I try to use it around twice a week, depending on how my hair is feeling. It also smells incredible, so it’s definitely been one of my favourites this month.

November9 November10

    4.   Rimmel Exaggerate Lip Liner – You’re All Mine

I’d seen a lot of bloggers, such as Lucy and Lydia and Meg Says use and recommend this product recently. So, obviously, I wanted to try it myself. And I really love it. I’ve found that it outlines the lips really well and is pretty long-lasting. Also, in my October Favourites, I mentioned Rimmel’s lip crayon, and I have found that these two products go really well together!

November6 November5

 5.   This month’s Glamour magazine

As I’m sure you all know by now, Tanya Burr appeared on the cover of Glamour’s December issue. And, if you didn’t then, seriously where have you been hiding? I really enjoyed her feature, as this was the reason I was so encouraged to buy it. I loved reading a little more about Tanya, and am happy that people have begun to take notice of bloggers and YouTube stars! However, it also had a lot of other interesting reads in there, such as the events of 2015, and an interview with the lovely Olly Murs.

October Favourites

It’s that time again, where I get to choose my favourite products from the past month. I’ve tried out quite a lot of new beauty products this month, so my October favourites are likely to be one of my preferred favourites post yet.

  1. EOS Lip Balm

I wanted this lip balm for so long, as I first heard of it when a friend recommended it to me. However, EOS don’t sell in the UK and only operate in the US, meaning I had to order it online and get it shipped to my address. However, it’s sure to say that it was definitely worth the wait, as I’m tempted to label it as the best lip balm I’ve ever used. The flavour that I have, and use all the time, is Strawberry Sorbet and it definitely tastes and smells exactly as it says! It’s moisturises the lips perfectly and I adore it’s unique and handy packaging.

2.  Tanya Burr Penguin Chic Nail Varnish

This is the first of Tanya Burr’s beauty range that I have tried, and I love it! I’ve been searching for a nail varnish in this colour and I managed to find it in one of Tanya’s varnishes, that I have wanted to try for so long. The shine that it gives is wonderful and ensures that it is a long lasting polish. The colour is also really complementing, and is especially lovely to wear during this time of the year.

 Oct                      Oct10

  3.   Nivea BB Cream

I naturally have a pale complexion and like to create subtle make up looks. So, using foundation on my skin doesn’t usually give me the best coverage or enable me to create the look that I really want to. Therefore, after trying out many different products and many different brands, the one that I am most drawn to is Nivea’s BB Cream. Not only does it give a really healthy and radiant glow to the skin, it also leaves it feeling moisturised and left looking natural. I therefore use this as a substitute for foundation and find that it still works really well with concealer, bronzer and blusher.

Oct5           Oct4            Oct5

4.   Primark Candles

With Autumn here, the nights get darker and the weather gets colder. Therefore, there seems no better occasion than this change in season to begin to buy and light candles. The first ones I have tried this year is Primark’s Red Berry and Jasmine candles. They have a light and sweet smell, that isn’t too overpowering but, instead, gives off a lovely, soft scent. Their subtleness and cute size/packaging also makes them perfect for lighting when taking a relaxing bubble bath.

5.   Rimmel Lasting Finish Colour Rush; Shade 100 – Give me a cuddle

I had seen something similar to this product in Tanya Burr’s most recent Fashion and Beauty Haul video. She really sold them to me and I thought that they were a fantastic idea. I then found Rimmel’s Long Lasting, and after using them, I’m left impressed. I really love the idea of having a pen as a tool for applying colour to the lips, as I have found it has many advantages over a regular lipstick. The first is that it’s really easy to apply. It outlines the lips wonderfully and makes it a lot easier to create your desired look. It also lasts much longer. I often find that my lipstick doesn’t last very long, and I’m usually having to re-apply throughout the day. However, this can last several hours and doesn’t really fade away. There is also a range of different colours that you can get from Rimmel, meaning that you could easily use different ones for separate occassions, depending on the make up look you want to create.

September Favourites

So, am I the only one who keeps on wondering where September went? That it just went by so quickly, you didn’t even realise it was here? I mean, how is it October already?  Anyway, here are a few of the products I’ve been enjoying and things that have kept me happy 🙂

  1. Zoella Foam Sweet Foam Shower Gel

Each time I add something new to my Zoella Beauty collection, I do a little happy dance inside. Because they never seem to disappoint me, as they are such a true representation of Zoella herself. The Tutti Frutti’s shower gel again has the scent of blueberry and akai, and appears to be the perfect scent for a bathing product. It’s a light and fresh fragrance, which really does help to soften and soothe your skin.

2.  Just Pink Range

The Just Pink range is an exclusive to Next Stores. It is described by them as ‘a fresh green floral fragrance with soft fruits and pink blooms’, and it really does smell as pretty and wonderful as it sounds! Their range includes products such as perfume, body wash, lip balm, hand cream and diffusers. I’ve always loved their collection and, this month especially, I’ve been relying a lot on their bath products to leave me feeling super relaxed and smelling heavenly.

3.  Back to School Stationary

So, this is a slightly different favourite this month. However, this year, I want to stay super organised. And I figured the best way to do this was to invest in a bunch of new stationary to help me stay motivated. I think that being organised is one way to help keep your life on track. I want to keep my mind clear and healthy and not have to complete everything last-minute.

4.  Zoella Cosmetic Purse

Ok, I’ve kind of gone a little overboard with Zoella’s products in this month’s favourites, but let’s call that a celebration her new product launch; all of which can be seen on her second YouTube channel; MoreZoella. I was in need of a handy little purse like this one, for all of the little things that get lost in the bottom of your bag, or you always end up forgetting. It’s the perfect size for fitting a few of these small items into and popping into your handbag. I also love the design of the cosmetic bag, which can now also be bought in a larger make-up/travel bag.

August Favourites

As promised, I’ve again created a list of the things I’ve been loving throughout August. I hope they give you a little bit of advice on the products you’d like to try out in the next few weeks.

  1. Simple Cosmetics

Simple have always branded themselves as the ‘sensitive skin experts’. They’re known for creating products that are kind to skin and full of ‘simple goodness’. So, over summer, I’ve tried extending my Simple collection, in order to keep my skin looking and feeling healthy and hydrated. All of the products work perfectly together and can be used as part of a perfect skin care routine. My skin has felt a lot more nourished and fresh ever since I’ve used more and more of their products, and has really benefited from their unique ‘no harsh chemicals’ range.

Simple 2   Simple 1

  1. Lush Pink Bath Bomb

When using this, it was the first time I’d ever used a lush bath bomb. I’d seen them used by so many famous faces of YouTube, that I wanted to see what all the fascination was about. And I can’t say I was disappointed. When I placed it into my bath, the smell of vanilla was both sweet and comforting, which I instantly loved. It creates pretty light pink waters and is able to add an extra layer of relaxation to any bubble bath.

Lush 1 00

  1. Rita Ora Rimmel Nail Varnishes

Throughout August, I’ve relied a lot upon these pastel nail varnishes to complement my soft, summery looks. They’re fun, girly, and not too deep or overpowering in colour. That means that they match both my style and personality effectively, making me even more enthusiastic about wearing them. I’ve also often mixed and matched these colours, as I’ve found that they all work really nicely together.

Nails 2         Nails 1

  1. Felt Eyeliner Pens

Up until recently, I’d only ever used pencil and liquid eyeliner as part of my make up look. I use pencil eyeliner pretty regularly, as part of an everyday look, yet I’d never been able to perfect liquid eyeliner. So, after seeing recommendations in many beauty and lifestyle videos, I tried felt eye liner for the first time and managed to create my desired look straight away. Although it’s not too heavy, it’s easy to control and manages to make your eyes really stand out.

  1. My Family and Friends

I wanted my family and friends to receive a special commendation in my August Favourites. I’ve spent so much time with the most important people in my life over summer and created more memories that I’ll treasure forever. I cherish the time I get to spend with both my family and friends, as I have so much love for each and every one of them. I want to thank them for everything they do for me and for forever making me smile x

July Favourites

So each month, I will be creating a list of the products that I’ve been loving the most. All of the views that I express will be my own and haven’t been influenced by anyone, but myself 🙂

  1. Zoella’s Kissy Missy Lip Balm

Zoella’s new Tutti Frutti beauty range came into Superdrug stores and online at on Monday 6th July 2015. Among the exclusive range was her: body lotion, cosmetic purse, body mist, shower gel, fizz bar, body scrub and lip balm. I’ve so far managed to get my hands on the Kissy Missy lip balm and I love it. It’s enriched with extracts of blueberry and akai and slightly pigmented with a baby pink tint, to colour and moisturise the lips. As Zoë mentioned in her video, it’s perfect for the summer months, to create a fun and luscious look. I’ll be expanding my collection of Zoella’s beauty range and will continue to post my thoughts on them.

lips 2        lips 1

  1. Barry M Flamingo Pink Nail Varnish

With the summer holidays upon us, I wanted a nail varnish that I could wear, which would add a pop of colour to my style. The Flamingo Pink colour from Barry M appears to complement a number of different outfits and is a fun representation of this year’s   vibrant summer fashion. Also, when applied with their top coat and nail hardener, it can last up to two weeks without fading, making it perfect for a summer holiday or special occasion.

  1. Soap & Glory Righteous Butter

I’ve been using Soap & Glory’s Righteous Butter so much over this past month. It’s combination of shea butter and aloe vera creates a heavenly scent and a cream that works just as it should. It moisturises and rejuvenates the skin, leaving it feeling soft and silky, rather than too dry or too sticky.

cream 2       cream 1

  1. Schwarzkopf Pro Styling Heat Protection Spray

I’m not going to lie, I got into the habit of using my straighteners and curling iron on my hair without protecting it first, which inevitably left it feeling dull and dry. So, I decided to use Schwarzkopf’s Pro Styling Heat Protection Spray, and it immediately made a noticeable difference. It can be used on both dry and damp hair to create a shield that protects it against styling with heat. It doesn’t weigh the hair down, but maintains the shine and softness the hair had before the heat was applied.

hair 2                           hair 1

  1. Ted Baker London Body Spray

Ted Baker’s London Body Spray is a perfect combination of rose, sandalwood and raspberry scents. It was offered as a part of a limited edition range by Ted Baker, and it’s easy to see why. This luxurious and romantic mist, although described as a body spray, can also be used as a substitute for perfume, as the scent is just strong enough for a sweet smelling spritz.
